A guide to jet ski safety equipment

Jet ski enthusiasts love the thrill of the open water—the adrenaline-buzz from riding the waves, the sense of freedom that comes with this high-octane watersport; it really is a hobby that attracts and retains many thrill-seekers.

Heading out to sea is a never-ending exploration, with so much to discover, but do you know the proper safety precautions that should be taken before you set out? If you misjudge the weather or fail to bring the right equipment, you could find yourself in a very dangerous situation.

However, don’t be deterred; there are plenty of ways for you to keep yourself safe whilst jet skiing in the UK, the one key rule to always remember is to have the necessary jet ski safety equipment with you at all times.

Here’s our guide to the jet ski safety equipment you’ll need.

Safety equipment

Spare kill cord

Kill cords can become damaged over time so it’s vital you always carry a spare. We advise checking the wear of your kill cord before every outing and, if you’re in any doubt, be sure to replace it.

Eyewear

Protective goggles are a real essential when you’re out on the water - especially if you’re riding in saltwater, as these will prevent it from entering your eyes, as well as protecting you from the sun’s rays and keeping your vision clear for your trip.

Personal Floatation Device (PFD)

Whichever PFD you opt for, make sure you have the perfect fit. For adults, it’s measured by chest size, however, for children, it will be determined by their weight.

Form of communication

Whether you’re out enjoying some time on your own or with family and friends, it’s a good idea to have some form of communication with you. If for any reason you end up on your own, in a dangerous situation, you’ll be able to tell someone where you are, directing them to your location.

Pen knife

A pen knife is a great tool to have on you in any emergency, but if you get swept away and caught in netting, you’ll be especially grateful for having a knife to cut yourself free!

Jet ski safety checklist

As well as making sure you have the right safety equipment on you, there are a few other items that are always useful to have with you when you’re heading out on the water. We’ve put together a checklist for you to run through before every adventure:

Jet ski safety tips

Having all of the correct safety gear is key but there are other checks you can do to ensure you’re keeping safe. Here are a few to follow:

Tell someone your plans and download the SafeTrx app

Always make sure you inform someone of where you’re going and when you are planning on returning. This way, if you’re not back by that specific time, they can head out to look for you.

Keep warm and secure

Being out on the water causes you to lose heat fairly quickly so ensure you’re prepared with warm clothing - a hat, gloves (for giving you a firm grip on the handlebars) and shoes that are warm, as well as having a good grip to keep you secure on slippery surfaces.

Always pre-check weather conditions

Never go out on your jet ski without checking the weather and current conditions first, this will allow you to prepare appropriately.

Keep a close eye on your jet ski

Always do regular checks on your jet ski to see everything is running smoothly. This can be to check security, as well as checking that the craft’s equipment is all in good working order. Consider utilising VirCru, a virtual crew that can monitor your vessel from anywhere. An app that’s linked to the craft’s equipment can relay important information and updates about the onboard systems.
